The last few days of a legislative cycle always brings a number of retirement announcements. On the Senate side, it has seen Patsy Ticer (D-Alexandria) and Mary Margaret Whipple (D-Arlington), two very classy ladies.
Then yesterday in the House Albert Pollard (D-Lancaster) announced his retirement. Albert and I are the same age and came into state politics at approximately the same time. When he ran for State Delegate, he was a former Legislative Director of the Sierra Club and the first young Democrat in some time to win in a rural district, i.e. the Northern Neck of Virginia. He’s been a great leader on environmental issues in VA, especially regarding the Chesapeake Bay, and a good friend. I’ve visited his house in Lively, Virginia, and he’s been kind enough to take my family around.
He also had some important things to say in this goodbye speech yesterday.
Let’s hope he’s back in some capacity down the road.
