A Respite from the Dog Days of August

The last few days have been the hottest of the year.  Last night, I was door-knocking townhouses where the front door was on the 2nd floor.  Up the brick steps, down the brick steps.  By the time I finished, I could have been poured into a bucket.

It's August.  My old house has no air conditioning.  My opponent has a half-million dollars on hand.  I have to prepare for a trial next week.  My kids are bored.  Life is tough.

Sounds like the right time for a beer at the Vienna Inn.

Please join us this Thursday, August 9th from 7-9 pm for "Chappy Hour" at the Vienna Inn on Maple Street to relax and share some laughs.  Can you believe that we are only 90 days away from the Election?

Thanks as always for your pleasant response. Interesting that being a liar and a terrible attorney are considered two different job paths in your mind.

I'll let my friends be the judge of that. As for our house, it was built around 1930. It's extremely difficult to retrofit an old house like that for HVAC. We do have 2 window units which run in the summer time. You learn to live with it.

Bottom line is I wouldn't trade my house for anything. I have a half-acre of land with a 5 minute walk to the courthouse. That's all I need.

I don't envy you having to be outdoors in this heat! I try to limit my air conditioning use because it can quickly double by power bill, but once the heat index hits 100, I do appreciate having it. You have the right idea heading to an air conditioned bar, keep us updated on your Chappy Hours!

You *do* know that there are new HVAC units that use little ducts now? Costly retrofit, but worth it if you're not going to be moving for a while.

'Course if you pick up and move to Richmond, that might not be such a good investment. ;p

Do I take it from this post that you're really just asking for us to buy you beers? Do the beers count as contributions?

Actually at Chappy Hours Chap buys the beer for everyone, not the other way.

Truegrit, others who like to mean: Come on, let's be nice when we visit Chap's blog. We're his guests here. Don't say what you wouldn't say if Chap weren't standing right in front of you. Dialog and debate reigns over hissy fits.

I'm a Republican and I support Jeannemarie (you know me, Chap, I'm the chick who runs races in the Jeannemarie shirt except when I'm volunteering).

Nevertheless, I'm honestly interested in what Chap has to say. Not to pick it apart, either. I don't have to agree with him politically to see that he's a nice, upstanding guy who cares about his neighbors. We differ in philosophy on some things, but I respect him.

Chap's a darned good runner, too, and I want to thank both Jeannemarie and Chap for coming out showing support for a charity I am associated with. Going home to virtual non A/C after running that one: ewww!

    As
I'm sure Chap can attest, if competitive sports teach you one thing, it is that winning isn't always as important as the whole journey that gets you to toe that starting line. What happens next, happens next. You win or you lose. But I appreciate those with the courage to take their sportsmanship into other aspects of their lives and I think Chap is one of those people. So I'm going to disagree when we disagree respectfully.

So have a relaxing time at the VI, Chap. Cheers. What's your next race?

Thanks for your post. You are a class act and a true distance runner. I saw you finish the 10K two weeks on the W&OD Trail and that was a tough run. It was at least 90 degrees and there wasn't much shade. Congrats.

As for the next run, I am probably off in August and then will tackle a couple in September. I run 3-4 days a week in the morning when it's cool. I try to mix both distance and some hill sprints.

I ran the Marine Corps Marathon last year and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. You should try it.

Thanks again. If all of Jeannemarie's volunteers are as determined as you, then I'm in trouble!

I have finished the Marine Corps Marathon - three times - 2000, 2002, 2004. My last one was special in several ways. I gave the finisher medal to my late cousin's mom, he was KIA in Afg. earlier that year. There is a volunteer who is trying to get someone to run in memory of every soldier and that's a daunting task, but I got to do it in a way that was personal. I intend to do Marine Corps again. I'm in this year, but in all truth I may wimp out and defer my entry to next year (they let you do that now), as my training has not going quite as well as I'd hoped this summer and I've got a weight pentathlon, a century, and duathlon looming on the near horizon. MCM is a great race. Once you've done it a couple times, the year feels empty without it!

Good for you, hitting the hills! I need to do that more. Hills are our friends, we just don't always feel that way while we're running them, right?!

Chap - Great to finally meet you. I'd heard that you were a great guy, and I have to agree. I enjoyed talking with you, and I appreciate how you took the time to really listen ... as well as convince me that you're the best choice. Look forward to seeing you in Richmond!
